A man tried to snatch a woman's handbag from her in front of Marks and Spencer on The Horsefair, Bristol.
The attempted theft took place at around 8.45am on Tuesday, November 27.
A police spokesman said: "An elderly and vulnerable woman were approached from behind by a man in front of Marks and Spencer on Horsefair. He attempted to grab her handbag.
"The woman was with her elderly friend who struck the man and shouted for help. A young woman went to their assistance but was threatened by the man. He then made off empty handed."
Detective Constable Lucy Forde is investigating, she said: "The Horsefair is a busy place at this time of day and we are urging anyone with any information to come forward to assist us. This was a nasty attack on two elderly females, who were left very shocked and shaken by the incident.
"I am keen to speak to a white man, aged early 30's (pictured in CCTV). He was slim, around 6ft, with yellow teeth. He was unkempt and wearing a grey top, with a white/lighter grey hood worn up and dark trousers. He walked with a distinctive limp."
