Those looking for a taste of Italy in the run-up to Christmas will find a warm welcome in Bristol's oldest Italian family-run restaurant, which is planning a traditional Italian festive season.

Renato's Taverna dell'Artista, which for 40 years has been the favourite hang-out for actors, writers, artists and media people, has a Christmas menu that has Italian specialities alongside the traditional turkey with all the trimmings.

Renato's in King Street was opened by Renato and Natalina Borgnana forty years ago when they settled in the city after moving from their native Italy.

Now Angela and Giorgio, together with Paul who has been with them for over 30 years, have taken over the running of the restaurant from their parents, although Mamma Natalina still oversees matters!

Work groups can take a cosy table in the building under the superb plasterwork ceilings that date from the 1650s and experience the atmosphere that has proved popular with stage performers for decades.

Sir Ian McKellen, Derren Brown and Amanda Redman are among the stars who have, this year, sung the restaurant's praises but famous visitors over the years are so numerous the family have lost count!

Said Angela: "This Christmas we will be welcoming people both to the formal restaurant upstairs and to the lively pizza bar downstairs. Christmas is important to the family in Italy and we will be treating those who come here like part of the family."

Decorations will include a traditional Italian Ceppo "Tree of Light" decorated with coloured paper and sweets, that diners can pick up as a treat at the end of their meal.

The Italian festive menu includes a first course choice including Prosciutto di Parma con Ruccola, Bruschetta dello Chef, soup or Calamari Piccanti.

Main course choices include turkey, sea bass and pasta as well as traditional Italian Christmas dinners like the Roast Veal in a light orange sauce or the rolled pancakes filled with ricotta, parmesan and spinach.

Desserts include Christmas pudding, tiramisu, Italian ice-cream or Torta della Nonna. With set price of £25.00 (+service charge) and a bar until 2 am it is the perfect place for a family or office Christmas event.
