A book which tells the history of Bristol's slave trade past is set to be launched on Thursday 20 February.

Bristol Slavers which has gained local interest following the popularity of the newly-released film 12 Years a Slave will be officially launched at The Plantation Caribbean Bar and Restaurant during a night of talks, drinks, reggae music and signings by the authors.

Penned by popular local character Peter Martin, also known as Pirate Pete and psychiatrist Dr Isioma Nwokolo, Bristol Slavers visits several South West estates and unveils which Bristol families made their fortune overseas in the Caribbean – the Colstons, Smyths, Nelsons, Wills, Goldneys, Frys and Berkeleys are all famous Bristol names with slave trade connections.

Peter Martin said: "We're really looking forward to welcoming people along to the launch of Bristol Slavers. The book has been 12 years in the making and it features some never-before-seen images and facts about Bristol's historic past so we're so excited to let people see it.

"The book will be of interest to so many in the city, from teachers using it for their pupils, to anyone interested in local history the book has something for everyone.

"There has already been great interest in the project, especially after we revealed the truth about Benedict Cumberbatch and his ancestral link to the trade. This story is featured in a double page spread in the book so anyone who wants to find out more, can take a look."

Peter Martin has been running local historic walks on the Harbourside for over 10 years and his previous book Swashbuckling tales of West Country Pirates has been used as a teaching resource across the South West.

The book has been co-written by Isioma Nwokolo, an esteemed psychiatrist, who looks at the human side of slavery and describes how those enslaved coped in adverse situations.

She said: "Around 40% of slaves were lost in transit and many suffered from extreme culture shock when they reached their destination. I want people to be able to identify with the past and understand how the enslaved felt as individuals.

"The launch night itself is going to be fantastic, with live reggae music and food and drinks provided. Peter and I will also be doing talks about some of our discoveries and bringing along some of the artefacts we have found for people to see.

"We want the evening to be both educational and fun and we look forward to seeing lots of people there."

Tickets to the event cost £10 if pre-booked or £15 on the door and include food and drinks. Books will be available to buy at the event for a special price of £10, signed by both authors.

Tickets can be bought by contacting The Plantation directly on 0117 9077932 or 07747623788.

Books can be ordered by contacting Peter at Peterthepirate@hotmail.com.
