Valentine's Day ideas: Clifton, Bristol

Clifton is arguably the most romantic area of Bristol. Its Downs and suspension bridge host a number of marriage proposals each year and its streets have long been frequented by strolling, loved-up couples.

The village's shops, restaurants and attractions too all seem to come in to their own in the run up to Valentine's Day.

Where to stay?

An obvious choice is the Avon Gorge Hotel with its renowned romantic views of the Suspension Bridge.

The Victoria Square Hotel – comprising of two listed Victorian Houses - is also situated in a prime Clifton beauty spot on the tree-lined Victoria Square.

A romantic walk?

The peace and tranquility of the Downs is an ever-popular walking spot. Down by the sea walls offers fantastic views of the city and River Avon.

A stroll through the streets of Clifton Village and into the quirky Clifton Arcade comes highly recommended.

How about stepping to the top of Cabot Tower? If you do you'll enjoy unmatched views of the city. The surrounding park still offers some stunning views of Bristol should you not want to hike the steep steps.

What to buy?

Flowers are a must on Valentine's Day. Whether a delicate single rose or a lavish bouquet Clifton has some fantastic florists including Flowers By Alison.

Everyone loves chocolate right? Bar Chocolat in Clifton Village sells a variety of yummy chocolate that get be gift wrapped to your requirements.

Clifton's Oh La La is a very friendly boutique and a "great place to spoil your lady" according to a review on this site.

Where to eat and drink?

The Lido offers a great view overlooking its lit pool. The food is pretty special too.

At the top of the picturesque Pak Street is the popular Browns Bar & Brasserie. You can enjoy a three-course meal for £29.95. You'll need to book early.

The White Lion Bar, part of the Avon Gorge Hotel, is the perfect place for Valentine's Day drinks looking out on to the Clifton Suspension Bridge.
