Marie Claire Diaz and Alice Bowerman are mother and daughter who have found very different and yet complementary ways of expressing their creativity.
Created predominantly in the last 18 months, when she began using Inks rather than oil on canvas, Marie Claire’s paintings have a sense of liberation and vibrancy. The shift in materials has been a rather freeing process and she finds the fluidity of the materials allow evocative yet abstract images to emerge onto the canvas.
Alice’s love of cinema has had a strong influence on the aesthetics of her photography: the deep grain which is typically associated with film as well as the ‘reel’ layout gives the sense of a moving, rather than static, image. The use of rich saturated colours, combined with her mysterious subjects, allow the onlooker to decide their own interpretation of the piece.
She finds this endless sense of movement found within a single frame incredibly inspiring. Blink and everything moves slightly. The way we look at an image can change, depending on our emotional state, our situation and what it evokes in the individual audience; a sense of ever-changing possibilities within a single photograph.
Both artists have a strong desire to leave their work open to the understanding and analysis of the individual viewer. It is the creativity of the audience they wish to provoke and for this reason each piece remains untitled.
