Left handed pianist Nicholas McCarthy, who played at the closing ceremony of the Paralympic Games 2012, joins Bristol Metropolitan Orchestra for an evening of stunning classical music.
Khachaturian - Adagio from Spartacus
Britten - Diversions for piano left hand and orchestra Op 21
Mahler - Symphony No 1 in D, 'Titan'
The concert opens with Khachaturian's Adagio from the ballet "Spartacus", instantly recognisable as the warmly romantic opening music from the TV series "The Onedin Line". To celebrate the centenary of Benjamin Britten's birth, Nicholas McCarthy joins the orchestra to perform "Diversions" for piano left hand and orchestra, ingeniously written and in the form of a theme and eleven variations. Mahler's first symphony, a youthful work replete with echoes of a bygone bucolic age, provides a suitably exciting climax to an evening of extraordinary auditory delights.
