The school year is starting with a new initiative in Bristol – the launch on 27th September of Schools and Colleges of Sanctuary. 5 local institutions are being awarded this new status in recognition of the welcome they offer people seeking sanctuary. The Launch takes place at City Academy Bristol, and is accompanied by presentations from the schools, speeches from the Lord-Lieutenant & local MPs, and music from Zimbabwe & Tibet. This is the first major initiative since Bristol became a City of Sanctuary last summer – and Development Worker, Forward Maisokwadzo is excited. “It brings very real benefits to the schools involved,” he says. “As well as promoting active citizenship & community cohesion, it provides valuable learning opportunities within the curriculum. And of course it’s not just theoretical – many of these students will have first-hand experience of the issues, or be sitting next to someone who has.”
If you’d like to attend, please contact Forward Maisokwadzo, Development Worker for Bristol City of Sanctuary, on forward@cityofsanctuary.org or 07919 894 900.
