The latest gig guide for the Coronation Tap starts tonight with Scott Hammond:

TUES 25 JAN @ 9 – SCOTT HAMMOND

Jazz standards and originals from Scott (who’s inbetween tours with Ian Anderson/Jethro Tull) on drums accompanied by Andy Nowak (keys/piano), and Ruth Hammond (sax).

SUN 30 JAN @ 4 – ZOE FRANCIS

Zoe Francis cut her jazz teeth in New York working in Brooklyn, Manhattan, and at Arturos in Greenwich Village, alongside great musicians such as Warren Vache, Joe Cohn, Chris Flory, Harry Allen, Alvester Garnett, Steve Ash and Harry Whitaker. Fantastic line-up including Gary Alesbrook, trumpet; Dave Newton, piano; Andy Hague, drums and Will Harris, bass.

TUES 1 FEB @ 9 - THE DUVAL PROJECT

A brand new venture by Gary Alesbrook, trumpet/flugelhorn, with an album planned for later this year. Accompanied by Andy Kinsman, sax; Richie Blake, bass; Danny Cox, drums, and Andy Nowak on keys, this will be a mix of jazz, soul and R’n’B influenced by Gary’s time with Raphael Saadiq, Lynden David Hall and India Arie. Old school funk with new school sounds!

SUN 6 FEB @ 4 - JAMES MORTON & FRIENDS

Seriously sensational saxophonist. And his ‘friends’ are pretty amazing, too! Last month’s gig here took the roof off – put this date on your calendar.

TUES 8 FEB @ 9 - THE TRIO

Denny Ilett, guitar; Dan Moore, organ; Ian Matthews, drums, with a mix of blues, funk, shuffle, boogaloo and jazz. Don’t miss this!

SUN 13 FEB @ 4 - RICK PAYNE & THE BLUES COWBOYS

Delta, Chicago and West Coast blues centred around the slide work of Rick Payne and the pyrotechnic soloing of Cleve Berarey. Widely celebrated for delivering a passionate and lively set - often described as mix between Ry Cooder and Robert Cray.

MON 14 FEB @ 9 - BRISTOL UNI4TET

Members of the Bristol University Jazz Band and the University big band, The Hornstars, play anything from classic jazz to swing, funk and even pop, and always give a lively and enthusiastic performance with a varied, fun and challenging repertoire.  “… excellent entertainment … very impressed by the band’s enthusiasm and professionalism.” Simon Cowell.

TUES 15 FEB @ 9 - DAMON BROWN’S RHYTHM METHOD

Damon Brown  - “the UK's finest straight ahead trumpet player" (Jack Massarik-Evening Standard) - brings his new heavyweight quintet to The Cori. Rooted in the sounds of Donald Byrd and Freddie Hubbard this band brings to life the rare grooves that have influenced much of our modern jazz and dance music. The irrepressible Mike Willox is on keys along with Thad Kelly on bass and Scott Hammond on drums.

SUN 20 FEB @ 4 - FREIGHT

Debut at The Cori from this new jazz quartet with original compositions drawing heavily from Thelonious Monk inspiration, and the fiery post-modern aptitude of John Coltrane. Pianist Martin Jenkins, composer of FREIGHT’s original material, is teamed up with the heavy tenor and soprano sax playing of Craig Crofton, the dynamic drumming of Richard Laws, and the rhythmical assured upright-bass playing of Greg Cordez. FREIGHT is a “beguilingly original addition to the Bristol jazz scene” (Tony Benjamin - Venue Magazine).

TUES 22 FEB @ 9 - MOSCOW DRUG CLUB

Brilliant and unique …  “a curious musical place where you’ll hear a mix of 1930's Berlin cabaret; hot Club de France; New Orleans funeral parade, and gypsy campfire songs from Denny Ilett and Dave Archer, guitars; John Pearce, violin; Andy Crowdy, double bass, and Katya Gorrie, vox/percussion.”

SUN 27 FEB @ 4 - JOHN PEARCE

Extra-ordinarily gifted violinist John Pearce with Dave Newton, keys; Julian Bury, a very much in demand bass player on the London jazz circuit, and Ian Matthews on drums playing jazz standards and some of Dave’s own compositions.
