It’s a bit of a classic and still superb. The Clifton

The Clifton Sausage
Sausage has been serving the best bangers in Bristol for the best part of a
decade now and even nestled as it is among some fantastic restaurants in
Clifton Village, it’s still a great night out.
As it was my girlfriend’s birthday we decided to go there
for dinner with friends and there was six of us in total.
I love the Sausage for so many reasons, one of which is when
you walk in the atmosphere just feels bang on. The decor is stylish but feels
kind of informal, (really trying not to say rustic) with a clear distinction
between the bar at the front (where you can also eat at tables) and the
restaurant at the back.
Now, clearly, as the name suggests, it is a place where
sausages figure quite prominently on the menu, but there are fish and seafood
dishes as well. In fact the menu is far more varied than I remember.
I won’t attempt a proper restaurant review, that is a skill
beyond me really, basically because everything I had tasted amazing, so I
couldn’t really criticise.
But I will say that I went for the Gloucester Old Spot
sausage with champ (mash with spring onion), and onion gravy. It did require a
side order of veg, but it was really good. It was everything you hope from the best
bangers and mash. The food is obviously to a very high standard and calling it
bangers and mash is like referring to the Cistine chapel as nicely decorated,
but at the same time they don’t get pretentious about it.
Puddings are marvellous as well, and I went for the apple
crumble with custard. Probably not great for the diet, but who cares, birthdays
only happen once a year!
They get it all right, it’s crucial to feel really
comfortable, among great company and like you’re in your own home.
The service was spot on as well, efficient but not
overbearing and they got everything right.
Great night had by all, thoroughly recommended.
