A village in India now has a clean water supply thanks to Bristol-based charity Frank Water and The Mall Bristol.

The shopping mall in Broadmead sponsored the city's 10k race in 2008 buying thousands of bottles of spring water for the runners.

The bottled water was bought from Frank Water Projects, whose sales fund clean water projects in rural India.

A total of £6,000 was raised and the village of Valluru in the West Godavari district of India now has a clean water facility which has dramatically improved the lives of the people living there.

Colin Lang, general manager of The Mall Bristol, said: "We are delighted that our work alongside Frank Water Projects has ultimately led to the installation of a clean water plant in Valluru village and as a result thousands of people now have access to safe and clean drinking water for them and their families."

Frank Water has funded 30 projects in India, bringing clean water to more than 200,000 people.

The facilities use the latest filtering technology and are owned and run by the community.

Frank Water was set up by Katie Alcott, of Clifton, in 2005, after she visited India and contracted dysentery after drinking dirty water.

She realised that by selling ethical bottled water she could use the profits to fund new clean water facilities for villages in need.
