An exhibition of pictures from an award-winning Bristol photographer has raised £4,700 for Oxfam.
The Oxfam bookshop in Clifton Village staged the exhibition of work from Gary Newman in the run-up to Christmas. The Photographs of Bristol exhibition gave shoppers the chance to buy stunning prints of the city taken by Newman for just £10.
It emerges now that 470 prints were sold in just six weeks – providing vital funds for Oxfam to continue its work relieving poverty and suffering around the world.
Shop manager Sylvain Facenda said the exhibition was a huge success, and aims to run a similar event this summer.
“It was a huge success. We sold about 470 prints to people buying them for their home. As we got nearer Christmas they were buying for presents, and posh Christmas cards.
“Gary said he was very happy. We were a little worried but we never expected to sell so many. We now aim to hold another exhibition in May of four or five photographers.”
Gary Newman, 38, won the 2008 Venue magazine photography competition and an English Heritage photography competition for his picture of Stonehenge. He said he was delighted to support the exhibition and Oxfam’s work.
“I have been a regular contributor to Oxfam and recognise the good work that they do around the world.
“I heard through friends that the shop was looking to stage a new exhibition and was delighted to help the Oxfam shop out.”
